Not worth driving 5 miles off the main road for. The locals were very nice though.
Water was obtained from the wash and from Shonto Spring, a couple of miles upstream from the store.
The Shonto Trading Post was founded, on the site which it still occupies, in 1915, by John Wetherill and Joe Lee.
What a rip off! They get your five miles off the road and it's nothing but a little grocery store with very few supplies.
This is one of the oldest trading post on the Navajo Reservation. It look just like it was in the 1950’s. It is owned by a Navajo woman Margaret Grieve., and run by her and her husband Al Grieve. Good selection of Navajo rugs, jewelry, and wedding baskets.
Very friendly and helpful staff. Nice selection of jewelry, rugs and more. It's nice to see that the smaller trading posts are still around. Found a great Ray Jack ring. Glad I stopped. A very pleasant visit.
It is a great place to visit. Surrounded by a few red rock mountains. We took pictures of the old school, the Hogan, and the old trading post. The cashiers were very friendly. Food prices a little high.
Supplies were brought in by wagon from Kayenta and were sold out of a tent.
